Spin
Editorial, Print

Spin is a book on the culture of vinyl records over the course of the 1950s–2023 (present). It emphazies vinyl as an experience because of it is physical music through its textured form and sound quality. What makes vinyl important and special in today’s digital age?

Vinyl records are a show of music appreciation despite the triumph of technological advances. There is a certain beauty and element of nostalgia that continues to draw people – young and old – to this medium.

The cover is designed to be black and white because I want to draw attention to the basics of a vinyl record with its circle cut, sticker and text. In contrast to that, the spreads cover a wide variety of styles and pops of color from the record itself or the art paired with it.

The Journey:
“Factory to your home”
The book’s opening sequence takes the viewer through the process and making of a vinyl record. This journey is important for vinyl lovers to truly understand and appreciate the work and time of its production in the intricate steps shown.

At record shops, divider tabs with names of artists or genres are used to help separate and search for a specific vinyl record. This is used as a design element along with the idea of side A and side B from a dual sided vinyl to highlight a physical experience.
This book is for music lovers who appreciate the craft and production of vinyl making. The imagery chosen reflects that in the way it showcases machinery, vinyl cut shapes and stickers, and cover art. Its elegant display of album artwork and collector quality makes it a great gift.
